Rainbow Smoothies

My morning ritual is a smoothie on my way to work, if I am really lucky the husband makes it while I am getting ready. When he makes it, it somehow tastes even better. Below is my go to list, a colorful smoothie one color for each day of the week. You can substitute any of the fruits, however mixing may loose the integrity of your bright orange or yellow colored smoothies, but will still taste amazing.

 

Red Orange Yellow Green Purple
½ c. almond milk

½ c. Greek yogurt

½ c. watermelon

½ c. frozen raspberries/ strawberries

½ c. Orange Juice

½ c. Greek yogurt

1 carrot, peeled

1 c. frozen orange/ peach

½ c. pineapple juice

½ c. Green yogurt

½ c. frozen pineapple/ mango

1 banana

½ c. Orange Juice

½ c. Greek yogurt

2 kiwis

1 avocado

Handful of spinach

½ c. pomegranate or cranberry juice

½ c. Greek yogurt

1 c. frozen berries (strawberries, blue berries, raspberries)

 Tip: Use frozen fruits as much as possible to avoid watered out smoothies by needing adding ice.

How to Declutter Your Home

At the beginning of every year I set a goal to declutter my house. This year it is more important than ever as the house is still in recovery mode from the wedding, the holidays and sadly still the move. The clutter is getting to me and this year’s organizational efforts are hitting a new high. In the next six months I am going to focus my efforts on finding a place for everything, clean and organize the basement and storage rooms and de clutter every single closet! Below are a few of my tried and true tips for decluttering my home. Now if only I could maintain my organizational efforts all year long.

  1. Clean the focal point of the every room: Start cleaning items that are in focus. If you start by taking care of your living spaces and leave the closets for last. You will feel so much better as you start to see progress in your efforts. Progress motivates more progress and soon your whole house will be clutter free. The art of doing stuff- one of the blogs that I follow shared this post a similar strategy of throwing 50 things away.
  2. Every month throw 20 things away: Either donate or throw them away, think about shoes you never wear, clothes that don’t fit, old invitations, ticket stubs or old magazines.
  3. Declutter your closet: take all the hangers in your closet, and turn them around so the hooks are facing out, away from the wall. As you wear any item of clothing, put the item back on the hangers with the hanger hooks facing towards the wall. After 6 months, anything that is still facing out needs to be donated, with the exception of seasonal clothing.
  4. Have a Junk Drawer: I know it goes against decluttering efforts to have a junk drawer but everyone needs a break. Even Monica from Friends, had a secret messy closet.

Moving- How to pack

In the last three years I have moved four times (and yes it was exhausting) and I can’t say that I knew much about moving the first time but I got better at it, over time. I put together some tips or things to remember as you start your packing adventure. Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes.

  1. Pack an ‘open first box’: This will be the first box you open when you move. It is the box that goes in the front seat of the car on the day of your move. Start packing this box early, and leave it open so that you can add a few things to the box as you pack. Make sure to add a pair or two scissor, paper towels, cleaning products, a change of clothes, and even some quick snacks for the day. The goal of this box is have everything you might need for that first day at your fingertips. This will avoid opening boxes looking for last minute things.

Things to consider include:

  • Scissors
  • Paper Towels
  • Cleaning products
  • A change of clothes
  • Snack foods/ soda
  • Paper plates and plastic utensils
  • Garbage Bags
  • Light bulbs
  • Batteries

 

  1. Label with contents and room: It sounds simple, but often times if you just label with the contents and not which room you want it to go in you end up with movers, moving boxes into rooms based on their discretion. And regardless of what is in the boxes… a box labeled sheets… doesn’t tell anyone or even you if that box should be unpacked in bedrooms or in the linen closet.
  2. Place the label in the same location: If you are writing on the boxes, write things in the same spot (NOT ON TOP). If you label all boxes on the upper right hand corner, you always know where to look. Seeing a wall of boxes all clearly labeled makes it easy to see what is in each box. This also helped with reusing boxes- if you have multiple moves going on, you can easier reuse your boxes by writing on a different side or in a different location.
  3. Pack and forget it: Once you have your boxes packed move them to a room, or against a wall. Keep your boxes all together to make it easier to move. If everything is labeled in the same location you will soon see a wall of neatly organized boxes in one section of your house/ room. This allows you to keep living in your house without tripping over boxes and being frustrated with the chaos.

Breakfast smoothies tips and recipes

The husband and I are trying to start the year out right and go the gym and eat healthy, like everyone else. One way in which we are doing this is upping our fruit and veggie intake. The easiest way for us to do this is first thing in the morning with a smoothie. Once you get the hang of smoothies they are very easy to make and manipulate.  You can add anything to a smoothing and in the right proportion it is fantastic. My method is usually to add frozen fruit and anything else I am trying to get rid of in the fridge. Continue reading
